Ofsted Report

“Pupils are lively and happy in this busy and purposeful school. They enjoy close relationships with adults and bond with each other. It is clear that some pupils are developing confidence and greater self-esteem. For many pupils, this is the first time they have enjoyed coming to school.”

The curriculum is provided in a structured and supportive environment and is planned to meet the personal, academic and pastoral needs of the pupils at each stage of their schooling.

New Barn School offers an education which exposes pupils’ to a broad, balanced, differentiated and relevant curriculum, presents them with challenges in which creativity is fostered and which is based on the essential elements of the National Curriculum.

The school has an excellent adult to pupil ratio with class sizes of up to a maximum of four students. This enables us to give our children high levels of support at all times.

All students are given a Baseline Assessment in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT on entry to the school and this forms the basis of their programme of study. Student progress is monitored as part of an on going process and is assessed at the end of each half term against National Curriculum levels.

Individually Tailored Programmes

New Barn School delivers a structured programme of education, tailored to each student’s individual needs and taking into account their Education, Health and Care plans. Students are taught in small cohorts and individually, by fully qualified teachers and instructors.

New Barn admits pupils from two of the Hillcrest residential homes in the Hampshire group, Acorn and Ashley as well as day pupils. The registered age range for pupils is 6-16 years old and covers Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4. Pupils are referred through the children’s homes from primarily social service departments from across England.
